Dr. Anthony Chow is an Associate Professor in the Department of Library and Information Studies at UNCG and incoming Chair of the UNCG General Faculty and Faculty Senate. He holds a PhD in Instructional Design and MS in Educational Psychology from Florida State University. His teaching and research expertise include digital and online learning, information seeking behavior, technology integration, leadership and management, UX and usability, organizational management, and analytics and informatics.

Dr. Christine Murray is the Healthy Relationships Initiative Director. Christine believes that safe, healthy relationships are a fundamental human right for all members of society. This belief shapes her research, teaching, and service through her work as a Professor in the UNCG Department of Counseling and Educational Development, where she is the Coordinator for the Couple and Family Counseling Track. Most of her recent work has centered on strengthening community responses to intimate partner violence and other forms of abusive relationships. For example, she is the Co-Founder of the See the Triumph Campaign, which is a research-based social media campaign that highlights the stories of hundreds of survivors of past abuse. Locally, she serves on the Executive Committee for the Guilford County Family Justice Center and is a frequent writer and speaker on the subject of domestic violence.

Rebecca Gray is an online MLIS graduate student in the Department of Library and Information Studies at UNCG. She has been attending UNCG as a distance student from her hometown of Toronto, Canada. Rebecca majored in psychology for her undergraduate degree which she earned from York University (Toronto, Canada). Her professional interests lie in medical librarianship and information literacy.

Leigh Ann Fansler is an online graduate student in the Department of Library and Information Studies at UNCG. Her concentration is school library media, though she also has an interest in public libraries, and how these two institutions can collaborate for the good of students. She has been a member of the Healthy Relationships team since Fall of 2018. In addition to this, she is a special education teacher with Davidson County Schools, instructing students in the North Carolina Extended Content Standards. She is a coach for Special Olympics at her school, and she recently had the opportunity to coach the Battle of the Books team. Her work with students with disabilities has also led to an interest in how libraries can best serve patrons who have intellectual disability and who are on the autism spectrum. When she is not teaching, writing papers, or creating Captivate slides, Leigh Ann enjoys reading, drawing, and playing video games with her boys.

Tori Linville Hopper is completing her final semester at UNCG and will graduate in May 2019 with her Masters of Library and Information Studies degree. Tori is currently looking to work within academic or public libraries with a focus on student engagement; reference, outreach, and instruction; or collection development.


The HRI MOOCs project is a three year, funded research collaboration between the Phillips Foundation and UNCG’s Counseling and Library and Information Studies departments. It utilizes digital technology as a nexus for teaching and learning for faculty and students designing and developing an online portal for the local and global community interested in access to free, interactive information about healthy relationships. The site is built on a WordPress framework connected to a UNIX content server that delivers interactive HTML 5.0 web pages developed using Adobe Captivate. It also features videos hosted on YouTube which are integrated into interactive, web based modules as well as podcasts that are hosted on Google Drive. Supported by a team of three students and one faculty member, the project also serves as an ideal learning tool to teach video production, instructional design, web design, and the development of interactive online content and assessment.

Presentation Overview

The HRI e-Learning MOOCs indeed represents a digital learning innovation. Designed specifically to address a local community priority focused on healthy relationships and parenting, the project represents a strong, interdisciplinary partnership both at UNCG and with the local community as well as a transformational educational and research environment for faculty and students. Funded by a private family foundation focused on addressing societal problems, faculty from counseling and information science departments built intercampus relationships to develop, host, and maintain the e-Learning portal including support from the Division of Online Learning (providing WordPress website hosting), IT Services (UNIX content hosting server), University Libraries (video production studio), School of Education Technology Support (software licenses and laptops), and the Teaching Resource Center (iPad, microphone, and camcorders). This digitally robust environment presents project faculty with hands-on teaching opportunities for students, who are both on campus and at a distance, who are funded to work on this project.

The current team includes a student scholar visiting from Germany and two students working as instructional designers one living in Canada and the other living in a small rural county in North Carolina; most importantly, all the content produced by this project is provided free and online, accessible to the world anytime, anywhere. The project reflects digital innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship. It first begins with a subject matter expert recording a video in a video production studio which includes the use of an iPad and teleprompter software, camcorder, wireless microphones, and a green screen background. The video file is then uploaded to a Google folder and then edited into short videos with a selected background in iMovie. The videos are then integrated into Adobe Captivate using a YouTube widget that allows for streaming video when engaging with the content in HTML 5 on a web page. Captivate allows for animated text that is synchronized to the YouTube video so that content is delivered in multi-modal format (video, audio, and animated text), images are added, and interactions such as hot spots, click throughs, and games such as crossword puzzles are also used to provide an interactive experience. Captivate also allows for interactive quizzes and assessment so learners can assess their knowledge at the end of each module. Once the Captivate files are produced on a local computer they are then exported into HTML 5.0 and migrated to a UNIX content server using FTP software.

On the WordPress web development end, the appropriate web pages are created, a welcome video is integrated into the module’s home page, and iframe HTML code is used to link and deliver the module in HTML so the content is experienced directly on the web page (no downloads, new windows, or redirects).

To date, four modules have been developed with a fifth in beta testing currently. An additional facet of the site is what we are calling Relationship Boosters, which are filmed and recording using WebEx, and then posted as both YouTube videos and as podcasts so they can be downloaded to digital devices.
